"Introducing the Strength of Tradition: A Transformative
Mallakhamb Training Experience"
A two-day Mallakhamb training session, a traditional Indian sport, was conducted by Shri Uday Vishwanath Deshpande and his team on 22nd and 23rd July 2025 at Chinmaya Mission from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Shri Uday Vishwanath Deshpande is a globally renowned Mallakhamb coach, promoter, and mentor, honored with the prestigious Padma Shri Award in 2024 for his outstanding contribution to Indian sports. A former Deputy Commissioner of Customs & Central Excise, he has dedicated over five decades to Mallakhamb, training thousands across India and 48 countries. He is the Founder Director and Hon. Secretary General of the Vishwa Mallakhamb Federation, instrumental in organizing the Mallakhamb World Championships and numerous international workshops. His pioneering efforts have made Mallakhamb accessible to visually challenged individuals and introduced it as a fitness sport worldwide.
A total of 30 students, 10 each from VKZPV Port Mout, VKV Sri Vijaya Puram, and VKNPV Ranchi Tekri, participated in the session, accompanied by the three PETs of the respective schools. Susri Varsha Bujone, Secretary VKV Andamans graced the occasion on both days, extended a warm welcome, and appreciated the inspiring efforts of Udayji and his team.
During the training, students were introduced to aerial yoga and gymnastic postures using wrestling grips in coordination with a stationary vertical pole, the core of traditional Pole Mallakhamb. They also explored Rope Mallakhamb, where similar postures were practiced using a rope. Though short in duration, the training proved highly effective and enriching. The students enjoyed the experience and gave very positive feedback.
"Mallakhamb is not just a sport—it is a journey of strength, balance, and discipline that connects the body with tradition and the spirit with resilience. This training has not only introduced a new skill but also ignited a spark of cultural pride and physical confidence in every student."
